What To Do When A Disaster Hits?

Spread the love
For small businesses on tight margins, it can be extremely difficult when a disaster hits. So, what do you do if you experience a flood, fire, or severe weather storm that shuts down your business operations and significantly affects your cash flow. Unfortunately, many fixed expenses like rent and salaries continue even if your revenues have come to a halt. Hopefully you have saved enough for a cushion for these types of emergencies, but even if you have, it’s a good idea to have a plan to help you recover as quickly as possible.

We experienced a major ice storm in the Pacific Northwest recently. We lost revenues and income for over a week at NW Personal Training, which is especially tough for a fitness studio, during what should be our high season.

Many of our clients reached out to us and wanted to know how they could help. So, I sent our clients a list of things they can do to support our recovery. Even family, friends or those who don’t train with you, can still support your recovery with some of these actionable items.

Ask Clients for Support….They Want to Help!:

  1. Keep training with us. Get right back on track. It’s good for you, your trainer and NWPT.
  2. If you can, increase your frequency or duration of training to make up for those workouts you missed.
  3. Do you need to purchase some sessions or fitness products? Any purchases would be so helpful right now!
  4. Do you have a friend, family or co-worker you could refer to us who has been talking about focusing on their health and would benefit from our services? Bring them in for a workout!
  5. Interact with us on social media. Like, comment and share our posts.
  6. Write a Google review highlighting the benefits you’ve experienced working with us.
One initiative that has helped us through severe weather and the pandemic is convincing our clients that we can still offer them a fabulous workout virtually. An online workout is better than no workout at all! So, although we lost revenues and our team lost income during the ice storm, since many of our clients still trained with us virtually, the negative impact wasn’t as great as it could have been.

Also, remind your staff and clients to support other local businesses like restaurants, retail, entertainment etc. during these disasters. They are most likely struggling and trying to recover as well.

Last, don’t forget to thank your clients for their ongoing support!

Yours in health, fitness & business,
Sherri McMillan
