There are many ways to conduct initial fitness assessments with a new client. Here at Northwest Personal Training, we have an initial fitness assessment protocol that is efficient, effective and consistent. This protocol incorporates the tests we need to create programming that works and that our clients love.

Points to Consider When Creating a Initial Fitness Assessment

Timing

The more tests you add to your assessment the more rushed you might feel. Focus on the tests that give you the most information for programming purposes.

Confidence

You want this assessment to feel productive, informative and confident. Be prepared. Be comfortable with the tests you will be performing. Study any information you have received from the client prior to the assessment. Do lots of role playing so that you are ready to be at your best.

Remember, the initial assessment is just that….the first assessment of many that you will have with each client. You should be conducting assessments during each session and each move your clients perform. This continually adds to your knowledge of your clients and allows you to create individualized programming for them.
