Keep Clients On Track This Time

What went wrong?  Why did your client fail last time?

Most people have great intentions and start an exercise program over and over and over again.  They decide to start working out and eat healthy and within a few months, for whatever reason, find themselves back where they started.  Something like a New Year’s resolution, summer, a wedding or a reunion sparks their interest and motivates them to try again.  They decide they will go on a diet or they will exercise every day.

Eventually, most people fail again because they are basically mimicking exactly what they did last time. 

Why do people get in the bad habit of just repeating past attempts doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result – isn’t that the definition for insanity?  The bottom line is that whatever forced them off track last time, will more than likely surface again. 

trackThis time, though, things are going to be different. You are going to help your clients be prepared and you are going to help your clients stay on track!  You need to develop a strategy for overcoming the roadblocks that your clients faces such as work, kids, fatigue or lack of time.  You will outline how you are going to assist your client in determining how he/she is going to balance it all.

Tip #1:

If previously your clients found work or family responsibilities got in the way of achieving goals, your strategy may be to request that your clients book their workout appointments into their schedule like they would any other appointment. They will carve that time out for themselves, their own most important asset! Remind them that they would not cancel a business appointment with an important client or cancel their yearly physical with their doctor.  Likewise,

they must never cancel their workouts. 

 

Tip #2:

Around 2 months into their program (when people tend to get board with what they are doing and sometimes give up)outline a list of new activities you would like your client to try every 2 months….both when they are working with you and when they aren’t. Help stave off the boredom before it even happens!

Whatever is the obstacle, you can help your clients develop strategies to stay on track this time!

Tip #3:

Ask your clients to do a little homework. Have them outline any obstacles that have surfaced in the past or that they expect will surface in the future.  Once they have outlined the potential obstacles, then you can determine the strategies for how they will overcome them.  Both you and your clients will be prepared – no surprises!
