Keep Client Trust During a Personal Trainer Transition

Keep Client Trust During a Personal Trainer Transition
Spread the love
Hiring new personal trainers and losing personal trainers is a part of doing business in the fitness industry, and transitions can be difficult for your fitness business and on your clients. Clients develop a relationship and connection with their personal trainer and then they feel like they have to start all over if their trainer leaves. The good news? There are strategies to maintain client trust during these transitions. Here at Northwest Personal Training, we have found that these 3 actions help keep client trust during a personal trainer transition.

3 Proven Strategies to Maintain Client Trust During a Personal Trainer Transition

Personal Trainers

Keep Client Trust During a Personal Trainer TransitionThe Personal Trainer taking on another trainer’s client, should review all of the client’s program files and notes so they have all the information they need.

If the previous trainer is still with your business, the previous trainer and the trainer taking over should review the client’s history, programming and needs.

The new trainer should let the client know that they have researched their history and file (and spoken to their previous trainer if possible).

Ask the client these questions:

“What did you like about training with your past trainer?”

“What would you have liked them to do or not do?”

“Is there anything you wish they would have done differently that you want me to be aware of?”

The new trainer could call the client before their first session to reassure the client that the transition will be seamless and that they have reviewed their chart.

Even after a few sessions, it is helpful for the trainer to check in with the client. They could try asking “How is the transition going? Are you enjoying our training? Would you like me to do something more, less or not at all?”

Customer Service Representatives/Front Desk Staff

Customer service representatives and front desk staff can also play a part in helping ease the transition. They can check in with clients to see how they are doing with their new trainer.

This can be as easy as checking in with clients as they come in to workout, sending them an email/text or giving them a call. These small gestures go a long way.

All Staff

Everyone on your staff can encourage your clients to train with multiple trainers and/or schedule with another trainer if their trainer is sick or on vacation.

Not only does this help other trainers and your business, but it also helps our clients see the benefits of training with other trainers. They will develop connections and relationships with your entire team.

You want your clients focused more on consistency and their workout routines, then being 100% dependent on just one trainer.

Unfortunately, trainer turnover, whether within our control or not, is inevitable and can be devastating. Since Covid, the fitness industry has experienced the most employee turnover in our history. Many of us are still trying to rebuild after Covid and learning how to cope with trainer turnover is just part of that process.
The best plan is to take exceptional care of your clients when a trainer leaves. When your clients see that you care and that you are doing everything you can to ease the transition, they will be more forgiving and patient during these transitions….especially if they have relationships with your entire team!
